POSITION SUMMARY
Serve as the polymer/membrane expert on R&D programs, contributing knowledge of measurement methods and degradation mechanisms in ion exchange materials. Act as a liaison between Nel and external researchers and suppliers to evaluate new materials and approaches.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work closely with Materials Scientists and Chemical Engineers to develop advanced electrodes to enable electrolyser cost reduction and efficiency improvements.
- Characterize polymer materials via acid / base titration, water uptake and swelling, conductivity, mechanical properties etc.
- Collaborate with external partners at National Labs, universities, and component suppliers to develop and characterize components.
- Apply engineering fundamentals to practical problem solving and develop and optimize robust component specifications to meet product requirements.
- Clearly communicate progress and status of ongoing technical activities to the team, project management and senior management.
- Keep up to date with current and developing trends in membrane and ionomer industry.
- Identify key opportunities for improvement based on data analysis.
- Special projects as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience:
MS or PhD in chemistry with focus on polymeric materials or equivalent.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of material and mechanical properties of coatings, polymer membranes, and backing polymers.
- Good understanding and experience in verification methods (microscope, SEM, XPS etc.)
- Excellent analytical and experimental skills.
- Ability to work independently, design experiments, interpret results and identify next steps
- Proven problem-solving abilities to overcome technical challenges
- Capacity to work in a multi-disciplinary environment with good analytical, interpersonal, and professional judgment skills
- Good organizational skills, record keeping, and follow through
