Mechanical Design Engineer Cell Stack Components
Are you a problem-solver who take initiative and who thrives in collaborative environments? Does turning complex challenges into simple, effective solutions sound exciting to you? If you’re ready to be part of a dynamic team making a real impact, we want to hear from you!
In this role, you’ll be a key contributor to component design—analyzing mechanical stress and deformation, fluid flow, load distribution, and tolerancing. You'll also focus on design for manufacturability, preparing detailed documentation, and conducting in-depth technical reviews.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and design components and assemblies for electrochemical cell stacks to meet functional requirements while minimizing cost. Order and inspect components for compliance with specifications.
- Perform engineering calculations to support design concepts, including stress analysis/FEA for mechanical robustness or CFD for uniform fluid distribution, and tolerance models.
- Apply sound engineering principles to the design and analysis of complex components and assemblies
- Use PTC Creo to create detailed drawings, assemblies, and bills of materials. Prepare technical specifications and technical drawings for detailed review.
- Use equipment and hand tools to assemble and test cell stacks and associated systems. Prepare test plans, technical reports, drawings, and assembly processes.
- Perform research and testing to extend electrochemical cell stack functionality, identify novel approaches for cost reduction or increased reliability, and find new applications for existing technology elements.
- Cooperate and communicate solution pathways effectively with other project participants to resolve technical and program challenges with proportionate solutions
- Collaborate with product- and manufacturing teams to ensure design meets manufacturability requirements, design for volume production considerations, develop inspection criteria, evaluate component suppliers, and solve complex challenges with supplied components.
- Collaborate with product team to troubleshoot complex field returns in support of technical service, and conduct formal root cause analysis
- Support product- and manufacturing teams with more complex cases of dispositioning non-conforming product.
Education and/or Experience:
- BSME or MSME or equivalent.
Required skills and abilities:
- 5-10 years of industry related experience (fuel cells, fluidics, gas separation, flow batteries, piping systems, pressure vessels), or PhD in related concentration
- 5+ years of experience designing with 3D CAD and analyzing precision components for complex assemblies.
- Capable of working well in a multi-disciplinary team environment with high degree of collaboration.
- Design of pressure containment devices or sealing systems.
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes including molding, machining, forming, and joining methods.
- Work experience supporting manufacturing operations.
- Supplier interaction and evaluation.
- Working familiarity with safe work practices and hazard analysis.
Preferred skills and abilities
- Experience with PTC CREO strongly preferred
- Experience with FEA (PTC Simulate or ANSYS preferred) or CFD (ANSYS CFX)
- Experience with project planning
Competencies:
- Collaboration
- Initiative
- Creative problem solving
- Communication
- Planning and execution
- Commitment
