Nel Hydrogen is looking for a Safety Engineer to strengthen our capacity within technical safety, compliance, and certification. In this role, you will help ensure that safety and regulatory requirements are embedded throughout the design and delivery of our products and systems.
Working closely with engineering, project, and execution teams, you will contribute to certification activities, support regulatory compliance, and help ensure that Nel's products and solutions meet relevant industry standards and approval requirements.

Your new role
As a Safety Engineer at Nel Hydrogen, you will work closely with engineering, project, and execution teams to ensure that safety, compliance, and certification requirements are embedded throughout process and product design. You will contribute across tenders, FEED phases, product development, and project execution, acting as a key representative for the technical safety discipline while supporting compliance and certification activities across Nel's product portfolio.
You will help define certification scope, system boundaries, and technical documentation requirements, support interactions with certification bodies, and ensure regulatory requirements are incorporated throughout development and delivery. You will also contribute to system-level safety and risk assessments and support the successful execution of certification and compliance activities.
You will be involved in both analytical and hands-on safety work, contributing to continuous improvement, best practices, and competence development within technical safety.
Your responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Ensure that Nel’s Process and Product design follow relevant safety requirements
Perform technical safety analyses and assessments
Establish and update technical safety related documentation and best practices
Represent the technical safety discipline in tenders, FEEDs and project execution
Contribute to competence building, continuous improvements, and best practice within technical safety
Contribute or facilitate process safety and risk assessments, safety reviews (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA)
RAM analysis, environmental budget/BAT evaluation, HSE in design, regulatory compliance
Prepare, review and/or approve technical safety documentation
Own certification frameworks (e.g., PED, Machinery Directive/Regulation, ATEX, LVD, EMC, ISO)
Define certification scope, system boundaries, and battery limits
Manage Notified Body / certification body interfaces (DNV, TÜV, UL, CSA)
Align compliance execution with development and delivery milestones
What we are looking for
We are looking for a structured and motivated Safety Engineer who enjoys working in multidisciplinary environments and takes a proactive approach to safety and quality. You are systematic in your way of working, thrive on solving complex technical challenges, and collaborate effectively across functions to deliver high-quality results. You have a strong safety-first mindset and are comfortable balancing technical requirements, quality, and project delivery in a dynamic engineering environment.
You bring with you:
A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline (specialization in technical safety, risk, or reliability is an advantage; relevant experience may compensate)
3+ years of relevant working experience
Fluency in English, both written and spoken (good Norwegian skills are an advantage)
Good understanding of standards such as IEC 61511, IEC 61508, or similar
Experience with regulatory frameworks such as PED, Machinery Directive/Regulation, ATEX, electrical or functional safety standards is an advantage
Experience with certification, CE marking, compliance activities, or industrial system approvals is an advantage

Location: This position can be based in Oslo or Notodden. Some travel should be expected to other Nel locations and occasionally to customer sites.
