Metallurgist
An immediate opportunity exists for a hands-on candidate with strong technical and communication skills to support research and development and drive continuous improvement activities. This position will require working in a team environment while providing subject matter expert support in metallurgy. The ideal candidate should have experience working with the specification, design, and test of components for electrochemical systems. This role will be full-time onsite in Wallingford, CT.
Main Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Conduct metallurgical analyses using advanced techniques such as optical microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and spectroscopy to characterize microstructures, phase compositions, and material properties.
- Develop, optimize, and validate metallurgical processes, including heat treatment, alloying, casting, forging, metal forming, and surface treatment, to achieve desired material properties and performance characteristics.
- Perform mechanical testing, including tensile testing, hardness testing, and impact testing, to evaluate material strength, ductility, toughness, and other mechanical properties.
- Investigate and analyze material failures and defects using root cause analysis techniques to identify contributing factors and implement corrective actions.
- Collaborate closely with engineering, production, and quality assurance teams to resolve metallurgical-related challenges, troubleshoot process issues, and improve product quality and performance.
- Stay abreast of emerging trends, advancements, and innovations in metallurgy and materials science, and apply relevant knowledge to drive continuous improvement and innovation initiatives.
- Provide technical expertise and support to internal stakeholders, external partners, and customers, including participating in technical reviews, audits, and customer consultations.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, specifications, regulations, and safety guidelines.
Minimum Qualifications and Skills:
- 5-10 years of experience in metallurgical engineering, materials research, or related field, preferably in a commercial environment.
- Proficiency in metallurgical characterization techniques, including metallography, microanalysis, phase analysis, and mechanical testing.
- Strong understanding of metallurgical principles, including phase diagrams, solidification behavior, grain structure evolution, and mechanical behavior of materials.
- Experience with metallurgical simulation software, such as thermodynamic modeling, finite element analysis, and computational materials science tools.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret complex data, identify trends, and draw meaningful conclusions.
- Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
- Commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and staying current with industry advancements and best practices.
Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Science, or related field; master's or Ph.D preferred.
- Experience working in a commercial / industrial product development environment is preferred.
