Safety Manager
The Occupational Health and Safety Manager will report to the Director of Quality Health, Safety & Environment. This position will have supervisory responsibilities of direct reports.
Main Tasks & Responsibilities
- Develop and lead a positive safety culture where all injuries are preventable.
- Support development of safety compliance and risk mitigation strategies.
- Work with production and R&D departments to proactively mitigate safety risks through timely closure of reported safety observations, unsafety conditions, unsafe acts, and near misses.
- Serve as the Process Owner for the ISO 45001 compliant OH&S Management System at Nel Hydrogen US
- Represent the Nel Hydrogen US with respect to safety when engaged by internal auditors, external auditors, or interested parties such as consultants and customers.
- Manage the OMS Risks & Opportunities Log by adding and prioritizing items then preparing key risks and opportunities for inclusion in the Management Review in accordance with the established process.
- Ensure the safety of workers in various roles through the development and utilization of the OMS Hazard Identification and Assessment log.
- Track Nel Hydrogen US safety KPIs to be maintained and reported monthly.
- Manage industrial hygiene and noise monitoring programs.
- Track OHSA recordable and list time incidents for monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting.
- Collaborate with the Emergency Response Coordinator to arrange, execute, document, and learn from, drills such as general evacuation or acid burn protocols.
- Facilitate in-person safety trainings and assignment of on-line safety trainings to meet regulatory and Nel requirements.
- Lead efforts to modernize and synchronize existing OH&S internal work instructions so that they remain current with OHSA requirements.
- Manage direct reports, holding 1x1 meetings minimum monthly, annual performance appraisals and goal setting.
Educational and Professional Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety or equivalent field
- 5-8 years in Safety Management role with managerial experience
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience with OSHA
- OSHA Rules and Regulations
- ISO 45001 experience
- Incident investigations
- Root cause analysis
- Audit experience.
- Subject matter expert of safety processes including hazardous energy control, confined space, hazardous communication, fall protection, PPE, job hazard analysis, electrical safety, machine guarding, industrial hygiene.

Physical Demands
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Standing, kneeling, and bending required during a typical eight-hour workday.
- Occasionally lifting components up to approximately fifty pounds may be required.
- Possess a full range of manual dexterity to assemble parts or pieces together quickly and accurately.
- Perform assembly operations in small and overhead spaces.
- Ability to use hand lift trucks to move materials in, around and out of the assembly area.
- Vision abilities to be able to perform intricate assembly and inspection operations.
