About the role
As an HSE (Health, Safety & Environment) Engineer at Nel Hydrogen, you will play a key role in developing, implementing, and monitoring environmental and safety programs that ensure compliance and promote sustainability. You will work closely with employees and leaders at all levels to ensure regulatory compliance, promote sustainability, and strengthen a proactive safety culture.

Main tasks and responsibilities
Build HSE capability across the facility by collaborating with employees and leaders at all levels
Act as a visible on‑site HSE resource, promoting a strong and proactive safety culture
Ensure compliance with OSHA and applicable environmental regulations
Prepare, maintain, and submit required HSE and environmental reports and documentation
Develop and deliver HSE training for employees, contractors, and supervisors
Conduct site inspections, audits, and safety observations
Lead or support investigations of safety and environmental incidents and follow up on corrective actions
Track HSE metrics and KPIs; provide regular reporting and recommendations for continuous improvement
Key Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Safety, Engineering, or related field, and/or 3+ years of relevant experience in an HSE role, preferably in industrial, construction, or manufacturing environments
Familiarization with HSE regulations and management systems (e.g. OSHA, ISO 45001, ISO 14001)
Hands‑on experience with risk assessments, audits, and incident investigations
Environmental regulatory knowledge covering air, water, and solid/hazardous waste requirements
Demonstrated capability to interpret regulatory requirements and translate them into practical site‑level actions
Proven experience working effectively with operations, technical, and maintenance personnel
Ability to take initiative, work independently, and proactively drive improvements in HSE performance
Availability for emergency response support when required
Ability to meet physical job requirements, including lifting and moving materials as needed (from 10 to 50 pounds)
Required Skills & Competencies
Strong knowledge of HSE regulations, standards, and best practices
Excellent analytical and problem‑solving skills
Strong communication skills, with the ability to train and influence employees at different levels
Ability to drive behavioral change and strengthen safety culture
High attention to detail and strong documentation and reporting skills
Proficiency in MS Office and HSE reporting tools
