Roll to Roll Processing Engineer
Main tasks and responsibilities:
- Work closely with Materials Scientists, Mechanical Engineers, and Chemical Engineers to transition toll manufacturing of roll to roll coated electrodes to Wallingford equipment.
- Responsible for development and implementation of process conditions and process specifications of new product.
- Will play a major role in commissioning, start-up and training during project execution. Will then transfer technology to the manufacturing team.
- Provide expertise for onsite operations group during process-related troubleshooting issues and apply engineering fundamentals to practical problem solving.
- Execute process studies and understand and link process effects to component performance.
- Solve any engineering challenges encountered related to chemical and material aspects of design and manufacturing process of roll to roll coatings to achieve the precision and lifetime performance for the resulting electrodes.
- Manage production runs with new products and optimize process to achieve product quality requirements and maximum production throughput.
- Establish and maintain documented work instructions in collaboration with Manufacturing Engineers for process optimization and control standards.
- Supervises and coaches junior team members.
- Clearly communicate progress and status of ongoing technical activities to the team, project management and senior management.
- Identify key opportunities for improvement based on data analysis.
Key Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with 5-10 years' roll-to-roll/converting experience, or:
- Master of Science in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with 4-8 years' roll-to-roll/converting experience, or:
- Doctor of Philosophy in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering with 3-5 years' roll-to-roll/converting experience.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- In depth knowledge and practical experience in roll-to-roll coating/converting processes and web handling (i.e., coating dies, winders, tension transducers, web surface treaters, vision systems, slitters, roll laminators). Start-up line experience.
- Ability to work with solvents, machinery, and computer systems. Knowledge of material and mechanical properties of coatings, polymer membranes, and backing polymers.
- Knowledge and experience in Design of Experiments (DOE), Failure Mode and Effect Analysis, and Statistical Process Control
- Ability to interpret data and develop insights based on process knowledge; propose, and test hypotheses. Must be able to summarize, organize and present data in graphical and tabular formats.
- Excellent analytical and experimental skills. Effective communication skills to interact with managers and team members
- Background and experience in thin film coating of wide substrates.
- General understanding of manufacturing methods including a basic understanding of manufacturing process optimization.
- Experience working with various coating deposition equipment (e.g., gravure, slot die, reverse gravure, ultrasonic spray etc.)
- Experience formulating and developing coating systems, including one component waterborne formulations.
